Maple Leafs News & Analysis

The Maple Leafs power play ranked 25th last season. Daniel Alfredsson's fix starts with faceoffs, edge battles and quicker puck retrievals, not a new formation.

Gavin McKenna power play role is the second unit, not the first. Hiller's September logic is sound. His November logic needs to be different.

The Maple Leafs power play was 25th at 16.8 per cent. With Daniel Alfredsson, Darren Raddysh and Gavin McKenna, it is the cheapest fix on the roster.

The Darren Raddysh power play case rests on volume: 115 slap shots and 212 shots on goal last season. Why that, not his 22 goals, is Toronto's real upgrade.

The Darren Raddysh contract is the Maple Leafs' boldest blue-line bet: eight years, $68M for a right-shot power-play quarterback. A gamble with a long tail.

The Maple Leafs plan to put Gavin McKenna on the power play's first unit right away — Toronto's fix for a 15th-ranked group under Daniel Alfredsson.

Daniel Alfredsson is the Maple Leafs' new associate coach, tasked with fixing a power play stacked with Matthews and Nylander.
