The most interesting Maple Leafs milestones of the 2026-27 season belong to the players everyone spent the summer trying to trade. Morgan Rielly sits 49 games from 1,000. William Nylander needs 15 goals to reach 300 and roughly 25 points to reach 700. John Tavares hits 1,200 career games inside the first two weeks of the schedule. Oliver Ekman-Larsson is 63 games from 1,200.

None of this changes whether Toronto makes the playoffs. All of it is a reminder that a roster the market has written off — the Leafs sit around 19th in Stanley Cup odds after finishing 32-36-14 — is still carrying a remarkable amount of accumulated NHL service. Here is the full milestone board, with the dates and the caveats.

Morgan Rielly is 49 games from 1,000, and every one has been in Toronto

Rielly enters the season with 951 career NHL games, all of them with the Maple Leafs. Assuming health and a normal workload, game No. 1,000 lands somewhere around the New Year — late December or early January, depending on how Jim Hiller manages the blue line through an 84-game schedule.

The context makes it heavier. Rielly already ranks 11th in franchise history in games played and fourth among Maple Leafs defencemen. He was drafted fifth overall in 2012, played through the tanking years, the Mike Babcock era, the Sheldon Keefe era, the Craig Berube era and now a fourth head coach. He has been the constant through a decade of Toronto hockey that has produced one playoff series win.

He also spent this entire summer in trade rumours. Sharks, Ducks, Predators, Oilers, Flyers — the list ran through most of the league before Rielly said publicly he expects to be a Maple Leaf on opening night. A no-move clause and a market that never produced a serious offer settled it.

Here is the editorial position: John Chayka should let this one happen. Not out of sentiment — out of asset management. A defenceman with a full no-move clause who has already declined to facilitate a trade is not a deadline chip you extract value from by pushing. He is a top-four defenceman on a roster that has exactly one other left-shot option of that quality. Let him get to 1,000, and revisit in the summer when the market resets.

William Nylander: 300 goals and 700 points, both likely before Christmas

Nylander enters 2026-27 with roughly 285 goals and 675 points in 737 NHL games, all with Toronto. He needs 15 goals for 300 and about 25 points for 700. Given that he put up 30 goals and 79 points in 65 games last season — a career-best 1.22 points per game — both markers are realistically December events, not April ones.

The 300-goal mark matters because of how it was accumulated. Nylander has hit 30 goals in five consecutive seasons and six times in 11 years. He led the Maple Leafs in scoring last season with 79 points and 49 assists while playing 65 games on a team that finished last in the Atlantic. He was, by a distance, Toronto's best forward during the worst season of the Matthews era.

Whether he can push further is the interesting question. We ran the math on a 50-goal season earlier this month: it requires 82-ish games of health and a shooting percentage in line with his career norm, not above it. In an 84-game schedule, the volume is finally there.

John Tavares hits 1,200 games in the first two weeks

Tavares has played 1,194 regular-season games between the Islanders and Maple Leafs. Game No. 1,200 arrives in the sixth game of the season — mid-October at the latest, and possibly during the opening homestand depending on lineup decisions.

The bigger one is 1,200 points. He sits at 1,128 (500 goals, 628 assists), which puts him 72 points away. He scored 31 goals and 71 points in all 82 games last season. Repeat that in an 84-game schedule and he reaches 1,200 points in the season's final week. It would be a fitting bookend to a Toronto tenure that has been consistently underrated by the fan base that watched it.

Tavares became the 49th player in NHL history to score 500 goals when he did it against Columbus in October 2025, and only the second to score No. 500 in a Maple Leafs uniform after Mats Sundin — who now works upstairs as Toronto's senior executive adviser. He has 228 goals in 526 regular-season games since signing on July 1, 2018.

The complication is deployment. Tavares turns 36 in September, and finding his optimal role is one of Hiller's genuine problems. An 84-game season is not obviously kind to a 36-year-old centre, and the milestone math assumes he plays close to all of it.

Auston Matthews and the long road to 500

Matthews enters the season with 428 goals and 780 points in 689 games. He is 72 goals from 500 and 20 points from 800.

The 800-point marker is a first-month event. The 500-goal chase is not — 72 goals is a two-season project at his current rate, and his current rate is the problem. Matthews managed 27 goals and 53 points in 60 games last season, career lows in both, on a career-low 11.9 per cent shooting. He suffered a grade 3 MCL tear and a quad contusion in a knee-on-knee collision with Radko Gudas on March 12, had surgery about 10 days later, and did not return.

Two injury-shortened seasons in a row have changed what a Matthews milestone timeline looks like. If he plays 80 games and scores 45, 500 arrives in the winter of 2027-28. Oliver Ekman-Larsson's 1,200, and the durability behind it

Ekman-Larsson is 63 games from 1,200 career games, which puts the milestone in late February or early March. He has missed seven combined games over the past three seasons, which is the reason to believe he gets there.

At 34 he produced eight goals and 39 points in 78 games while averaging 20:36 a night — his best goal and point totals since 2018-19 in Arizona, and enough to lead Toronto's defence in scoring. That made him the first Leafs defenceman other than Rielly to lead the group in a season since 2019-20. He has two years left at a $3.5 million cap hit, which is among the better value contracts on the roster even as his name keeps surfacing in trade chatter.

Why milestones matter to a team that finished last

There is a real argument that a club coming off a 78-point season should not be celebrating longevity. Games played is not a competitive statistic. Rielly's 1,000th game and Ekman-Larsson's 1,200th are, in a cold reading, evidence that Toronto's blue line is old.

That reading is not wrong. It is also incomplete. Nylander's 300th goal and Tavares's 1,200th point represent production that a rebuilding roster does not have and cannot buy. Chayka's summer was about adding cheap, hard, replaceable depth around a core he could not move. The milestone board is a decent proxy for what that core is still worth — and, in Nylander's case, for a player entering his prime years on a contract Toronto will be glad it signed.

What's next

The first milestone to watch is Tavares at 1,200 games, roughly the second week of October. Matthews should clear 800 points in the same window. Nylander's 300th goal and 700th point are likely December events; Rielly's 1,000th game lands around the turn of the year; Ekman-Larsson's 1,200th comes late in the winter.

The one that could disappear is Rielly's. If the trade market warms up at the deadline and he waives, the 1,000th game happens somewhere else. Keep an eye on contracts for the cap picture that would make such a move possible.
