Maple Leafs vs Blue Jackets: the result
The Maple Leafs vs Blue Jackets game on Oct. 20 at Nationwide Arena turned into Toronto's most complete night of the season: a 6-2 win built on four second-period goals, a power-play goal from Kirill Marchenko against the team that traded him, and the first three-point game of Easton Cowan's NHL career. Auston Matthews had a goal and an assist in his 700th NHL game, and Anthony Stolarz made 35 saves on 37 shots.
The win moved Toronto to 5-4-2 and gave the Leafs a second straight win after a three-game skid. Columbus fell to 3-5-0 and has now lost four of its last five. It was also the second night of a back-to-back for the Leafs, who had beaten San Jose 3-1 at home the night before, which makes the margin more impressive, not less.
The cost was Jake McCabe. Toronto's top-pair defenceman left in the first period after taking a high stick to the face from Kent Johnson and did not return. More on that below and in our full look at the McCabe injury and the blue line.
How the game unfolded
Columbus scored first. Jake Christiansen beat Stolarz at 2:38 of the first period, his first NHL goal since Dec. 21, 2024. Toronto answered on the power play at 8:16, when a Matthews shot-pass deflected in off Marchenko's skate past Jet Greaves. The Nationwide Arena crowd booed Marchenko for most of the night and that goal did nothing to quiet them.
The game turned in the second period. The Leafs scored four times in a 9:37 span, and the middle frame has been a recurring problem for Columbus this season. William Nylander and Matthews scored 46 seconds apart early in the frame, Cowan scored shorthanded at 6:48 to make it 4-1, and Jack Roslovic made it 5-1 at 12:03, which ended Greaves' night. He allowed five goals on 19 shots in 32:03 and gave way to Cam Talbot.
The scoring summary, with the times confirmed by the NHL.com recap:
| Period | Time | Team | Scorer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | 2:38 | Columbus | Jake Christiansen |
| 1st | 8:16 (PP) | Toronto | Kirill Marchenko |
| 2nd | Early | Toronto | William Nylander |
| 2nd | 46 seconds later | Toronto | Auston Matthews |
| 2nd | 6:48 (SH) | Toronto | Easton Cowan |
| 2nd | 12:03 | Toronto | Jack Roslovic |
| 3rd | 4:13 | Columbus | Charlie Coyle |
| 3rd | 16:58 | Toronto | Marshall Rifai |
Charlie Coyle's backhand at 4:13 of the third was his first goal of the season. Marshall Rifai closed the scoring with a point shot past Talbot at 16:58, the first NHL goal of his career in his fifth game. Morgan Rielly and Roslovic had the assists. Rifai is 28, went undrafted and started in the organization on an AHL contract, which made it the most popular goal on the Leafs' bench.
Marchenko wins the first head-to-head with Knies
This was the first meeting since the Sept. 28 trade that sent Matthew Knies to Columbus and brought Marchenko, Miles Wood and Elvis Merzlikins to Toronto. On the scoresheet it was not close. Marchenko scored the goal that tied the game and the Leafs won by four. Knies had three shots and a couple of hits, was held without a point again, and took a slashing penalty in the third period while Columbus was already short-handed.
The underlying numbers were kinder to Knies. The Leafs Nation's tracking had Knies' line outshooting Marchenko's in their shared head-to-head minutes, so this was not a night where one player was invisible. But results are what the trade will be judged on, and Marchenko now has five goals and 11 points in 11 games as a Leaf. Adam Fantilli, his former linemate, caught him with a heavy first-period hit after some pointed pre-game comments, and Marchenko got up and kept playing.
Afterward, Marchenko described it as a special night and said the win mattered to him, while also thanking the Columbus fans who had watched him grow there. We have argued for two weeks that Toronto is winning this trade, and Tuesday was the cleanest evidence yet.
Easton Cowan's breakthrough night
Cowan was the best player on the ice for long stretches. He hit the post early in the first period, drew a penalty when Dmitri Voronkov tripped him on a 2-on-0, and then scored the shorthanded goal that put the game away. He finished with a goal and two assists, the first three-point game of his NHL career.
The shorthanded goal carried a bit of history. Cowan, 21, is the first Maple Leafs player aged 21 or younger to score a shorthanded goal since Mitch Marner in February 2019. He is now at four goals and 10 points in 11 games, which puts him on a pace far beyond the 29 points he scored in 66 games as a rookie last season.
Jim Hiller's postgame assessment, as reported by Maple Leafs Hot Stove, was that Cowan has exceeded his expectations, and that the young winger had told him this is what he was going to do. We dig into what that means for his role, and for his trade status, in our Easton Cowan analysis.
Matthews at 700, and Stolarz bounces back
Matthews became the 17th player in franchise history to play 700 games with Toronto. His goal was the 436th of his career, which ties Pavel Bure for the sixth-most goals by any player through 700 NHL games, behind only Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Mike Bossy, Brett Hull and Jari Kurri. He has 18 points in 11 games and is two points from 800 for his career. We break the milestone down in our Matthews 700-game piece.
Stolarz needed this one. He had a rough night in Utah last week, a 5-4 loss in which the Mammoth scored repeatedly off the rush. On Tuesday he faced 37 shots, a lot for a 6-2 game, and stopped all but two. That matters because the Leafs have been fielding questions about Stolarz's future ever since reports said the Rangers had kicked the tires, a scenario we covered in our Stolarz trade piece.
Columbus coach Rick Bowness put the loss on his team's coverage, saying after the game that his group made it too easy for Toronto's top-down play. Four goals against in under 10 minutes of the middle frame is a structural problem, not bad luck.
The McCabe injury
McCabe left midway through the first period after Johnson's stick caught him on the left side of the face, around the eye. Johnson took a double minor for high-sticking. The team ruled McCabe out before the start of the third period, and Hiller described the decision as precautionary, adding that he had bumped into McCabe after the game and that he seemed to be doing OK.
Troy Stecher led Toronto's defencemen in ice time with McCabe out, and the Leafs played most of the night with five defencemen. With Chris Tanev already on injured reserve with an upper-body injury, losing McCabe for any length of time would leave the Leafs without two of their top four. Nick Blankenburg, scratched on Tuesday, is the first option back in.
What's next for the Leafs
Toronto returns home to face the New York Rangers at Scotiabank Arena on Thursday, Oct. 22, then heads west to play the Edmonton Oilers on Oct. 24. The Rangers arrive 7-3-1 and perfect at home, with Dylan Garand in net in place of the injured Igor Shesterkin. Our Maple Leafs vs Rangers preview has the matchup.
The takeaway from Columbus is simple. When the Leafs push the pace through the neutral zone, they have the forwards to bury teams; four goals in under 10 minutes is what this roster is supposed to look like. The concern is that the win came at the cost of another defenceman. Track where Toronto sits in the division on our NHL standings page.
