The Maple Leafs key dates 2026-27 calendar opens earlier than any in nearly two decades, and the first entry is not in Toronto. Here is the full runway, with what has been confirmed, what has moved, and what the club still has not announced.

September 12-13: the prospect games move to Gatineau

Toronto's rookies open the fall at the 2026 NHL Prospect Challenge, hosted by the Ottawa Senators on September 12 and 13 at Centre Slush Puppie in Gatineau. It is a four-team showcase featuring the Maple Leafs, Senators, Canadiens and Winnipeg Jets, with tickets starting around $20.

That is a change worth flagging. Toronto had spent the past couple of years playing its rookie games at Bell Centre in Montreal. This year the event shifts across the river to Gatineau, with Ottawa as host.

The Leafs' two games: Toronto faces the Senators at 6 p.m. on September 12, then plays the Jets at 1 p.m. ET on September 13. The obvious storyline is whether Gavin McKenna suits up. We covered why his rookie-tournament debut remains uncertain — clubs routinely hold their most valuable young assets out of low-stakes September hockey, and the No. 1 overall pick has an entry-level contract and a top-six job waiting either way.

Easton Cowan, Ben Danford, Tyler Hopkins and the Calder Cup-winning Marlies group give this one more weight than most rookie tournaments. Toronto's pipeline is deeper than it has been in a decade, and Gatineau is the first live look.

Mid-September: training camp, and one contract deadline

The club has announced its preseason slate but has not yet released the training camp schedule, including the exact reporting date, medical day and first on-ice session. Expect those details in the coming weeks. Based on a September 19 preseason opener, camp opening around the middle of the month is the reasonable assumption — but it is an assumption until Toronto says so.

One league-wide date sits in the same window. September 15 is the cutoff for teams signing players to eight-year extensions before the new collective bargaining agreement's shorter term limits take effect. For the Leafs, the practical significance is indirect: rivals rushing to lock players up before the deadline changes the trade market Chayka is shopping in.

September 19: preseason opens with a split squad against Montreal

Toronto's exhibition schedule begins Saturday, September 19 with split-squad games against the Canadiens. Game times and broadcast details are still to come.

Split-squad openers are where roster battles actually get decided, because they are the one night the coaching staff has to dress two full lineups and everybody plays. With the NHL trimming the preseason slate this year, there are fewer evaluation nights than teams are used to — which compresses the runway for anyone trying to play their way onto the roster rather than being handed a job.

Watch the bottom of the forward group and the third defence pair. Those are the only spots genuinely open.

September 29: opening night against the Canadiens

The Maple Leafs host Montreal at Scotiabank Arena on Tuesday, September 29 at 7 p.m. ET on Sportsnet — the second game of the league's opening-night doubleheader. It is the earliest an NHL season has started since 2007-08, a consequence of the expanded 84-game schedule needing more calendar to fit into.

Toronto against Montreal on opening night, in Toronto, with a No. 1 overall pick debuting and a new head coach behind the bench, is about as loaded as a season opener gets. Jim Hiller's first regular-season game as Leafs coach comes against the oldest rival in the sport.

It also functions as the first real referendum on the Chayka retool. Sergei Bobrovsky in Toronto's crease, McKenna on a wing, a rebuilt bottom six — all of it gets its first public test in one night.

October 13 and the 84-game grind

The 2026-27 season is the NHL's first 84-game schedule since 1993-94, running 1,344 games across 194 days. Every team plays two extra contests, both against divisional opponents, one home and one away.

October 13 is the NHL Frozen Frenzy, one of only two dates all season when all 32 teams are in action. The other is April 10, the final day of the regular season.

The longer schedule matters more to Toronto than to most teams, for one specific reason: Bobrovsky turns 38 during the season, and the workload math on a 37-year-old starter across 84 games is the single biggest variable in the Leafs' year. The dates to circle after that

A few games already stand out on the 2026-27 calendar:

• Black Friday in Boston — a 1 p.m. afternoon game against the Bruins, the NHL's now-annual holiday showcase slot.
• Boxing Day in Montreal — Leafs at Canadiens on December 26, the most Canadian date on any NHL schedule.
• March 6 in Florida — Bobrovsky's return to Sunrise, where he spent seven seasons and won two Stanley Cups. Toronto visits the Panthers again on April 1.
• April 10 at Madison Square Garden — the Leafs close the regular season on the road against the Rangers, on the same day all 32 teams play.

What we still do not know

Three things remain unannounced. Training camp dates and the medical/reporting schedule are still to come from the club. Preseason game times and broadcast assignments have not been released. And the roster itself is not finished — Chayka has said there may be more work to do, and Toronto is currently over the salary cap before Max Domi's long-term injured reserve relief applies at the start of the season.

That last point is the one that could still move a name. Any trade to create room would most plausibly land between now and the opening of camp, when teams around the league are doing the same arithmetic and the trade market briefly wakes up.

What's next

The dead part of the summer has about four weeks left in it. From September 12 onward, this stops being a projection exercise: prospects in Gatineau, camp battles in Toronto, split squads against Montreal, and then an opening night that carries more expectation than any Leafs season since 2023.
